Advanced Stabilization
Technology for Greenhouse Films |
Presented by:
Sari-Beth Samuals, Global Marketing
Manager, Polymer Additives
Duration : 12 minutes
Run the Webevent |
Greenhouse films are designed to protect crops under severe environmental
conditions (direct sunlight exposure and high temperatures) but must also
maintain their transparency and mechanical integrity when exposed to the
aggressive pesticides that are used to control pests in the greenhouse. In order
to reach the targeted service life, the films must contain UV stabilizer
technology that is resistant to pesticides. The use of greener pesticides,
e.g,.elemental sulfur, is increasing and this is creating demand for UV light
stabilizers with even greater resistance to pesticides. In this webevent,
advanced technology for the UV stabilization of greenhouse films will be
described. |

New Polymers for
Improved Flocculation of high DSP: Containing
Muds |
Presented by:
Matt Davis, Manager, Alumina Applications
Technology Group
Duration : 15 minutes
Run the Webevent |
The production of alumina from bauxite requires
an effective solid-liquid separation in gravity
thickeners to generate liquor containing low
amounts of suspended solids. As the quality of
bauxite continues to deteriorate (increased
reactive silica content), this separation
becomes more difficult due to the formation of
desilication products (DSP). The presence of
DSP has a detrimental effect on various areas of
alumina production and cannot be overcome using
conventional flocculants.
It has been discovered that
polymers incorporating silane functionality show
improved flocculation of suspended DSP solids
when added to the slurry in combination with
hydroxamated polyacrylamide (HXPAM). Recent
developments will be presented to demonstrate
the utility of this new molecule for improved
clarification of red mud containing slurries
generated in the Bayer Process. |

Waterborne Epoxy
Resin Dispersion for Low VOC, 2-Pack High
Performance Metal Primers
without using Anti-Corrosion Pigments |
Presented by:
Ming Tsang - Technical Service & Development
(TS&D), Liquid Coating Resins & Additives
Duration : 21 minutes
Run the Webevent |
A new waterborne, modified
solid epoxy resin dispersion with good
flexibility and improved shear stability is
presented. When this binder is used, high
performance metal primers can be formulated
without the use of anti-corrosion pigments. This
is highly desirable since the toxicological
effects of zinc phosphate and other zinc-based
salts are causing environmental concerns.
Primers formulated with this new resin provide
equal or better corrosion resistance when
compared to a number of waterborne and
solventborne paint formulations, some of which
contain anti-corrosion pigments.
Other advantages can also be obtained, including
the possibility of formulating metal primers
with VOC contents less than 100g/L. In addition,
direct pigment grinding is possible under
processing conditions typical for other standard
waterborne epoxy dispersions. |

Formulation of 2K
Waterborne Concrete Floor Coating to Meet New
VOC Standard |
Presented by:
Ming Tsang - Technical Service & Development
(TS&D), Liquid Coating Resins & Additives
Duration : 27 minutes
Run the Webevent |
Organic solvents are
commonly used in 2-pack waterborne epoxy
coatings such as high performance floor
finishes. Generally, these solvents provide
various benefits, such as facilitating proper
film formation, making it easier to mix parts A
& B together, and are also thought to extend the
pot-life. However, due to new lower VOC limits
on floor coatings enacted in the south coast
region of California, the reduction or removal
of organic solvents is desired.
By using specific raw materials and formulation
techniques, it is possible to formulate garage
concrete floor topcoats with VOC contents below
50g/L, while maintaining good performance
properties and ease of field applications by
do-it-yourselfers (DIY). |

Factors Affecting
Clarity in Lab Hydrate Settling Tests |
Presented by:
Scott Moffatt, Applications Specialist,
Alumina Processing Chemicals
Duration : 18 minutes
Run the Webevent |
During this webevent, you
will see the results of an experiment with a
full factorial design to estimate the effects of
controlled changes in liquor temperature, solids
concentration and particle size distribution on
supernatant clarity in laboratory-scale settling
tests.
The liquor was tested “as is” and after
treatment with a flocculant. The experiment was
carried out on three separate occasions to
provide some information on the magnitude of
experimental error in the test setup.
Each of the factors had a statistically
significant main effect on clarity when varied
over a reasonable range such as could be
encountered in practice; there were also some
statistically significant interactions among the
factors. Effect magnitudes and confidence
intervals are reported, and the implications of
the findings on the conduct and interpretation
of laboratory testing and on the assessment of
the performance of a plant scale hydrate
classification circuit are discussed. |

Enhancement of Physical Separation Technologies:
Electrostatic and Magnetic Separation |
Presented by:
S. Ravishankar,
Manager, Technology
Mining Chemicals
Duration : 25 minutes
Run the Webevent |
The physical separation
technologies of mineral exploit the differences
between properties such as gravity, magnetic
susceptibility or surface electrical
conductivity.
The separation efficacy suffers when the feed
constitutes finer particles and coated with
surface contaminant resulting in production rate
and product purity issues.
Cytec Industries has been developing chemical
enhancement technologies for physical
separation. The major advantages of chemical
enhancement technology to magnetic and
electrostatic separation include: simple
extension to existing magnetic and electrostatic
separation technology to produce quality
products, ability to produce comparable product
in quality with cost effectiveness compared to
incumbent technologies, removal of impurity
minerals over wide size range, removing
non-magnetic impurities, reducing the
recirculation load in cases of electrostatic
separation and providing similar process flow
combines with sustainable robust process.
This webevent will exemplify minerals systems
including kaolin, carbonate, talc and heavy
minerals. |
