Cytec Engineered Materials' ablative materials product development group continues to work on products designed to meet the next generation system requirements. Recent product development efforts have resulted in:
  • Two low density silica materials for light weight and low thermal conductivity; MXS 383 LD (SpG 1.3) and MXS 385 LD (SpG 1.0)
  • Alternate to rayon-based carbon ablatives candidate materials that are PAN fiber based and have thermal conductivity and expansion properties similar to rayon based materials. MX 4810 is currently available and a lower cost version MX 4830 is in continuing development.
  • Improved performance standard density silica reinforced material, MXS 335B, which has a lower smoke signature and improved erosion performance
  • Enhanced materials for missile launching system applications. Our new MXBE 356 has a 20% improvement in both erosion and backside temperature performance at a low cost similar to our baseline MXB 360 used on the current vertical launching system. We have also tailored the MXB 360 material to permit tape wrapping and autoclave curing from what was only a compression moldable grade product.
  • The development of a granular carbon fiber molding compound, MXC 150, whose performance vs. cost trade-off makes it suitable for a variety of applications.

The matrix of resin formulations, reinforcements and product forms permit Cytec Engineered Materials to provide the best material for various demanding applications.
