Cytec Engineered Materials offers an extensive array of advanced structural film adhesives for a variety of demanding applications. These film adhesives are designed to meet precise temperature, toughness, environmental and cure requirements. Products are based on a wide range of chemistries, including epoxy, bismaleimide, phenolic, cyanate ester, and polyimide.
Film adhesives for every application
Adhesive bonding is the principle method of bonding composites to composites, composites to metal and other materials (including honeycomb sandwich core materials) and metal to metal. To enhance peel strength, modifiers such as rubber compounds can be added to increase toughness and flexibility. Adhesive chemistry can also be modified to achieve desired cure temperature, moisture sensitivity, and flow characteristics during cure and out-life.
A majority of the adhesives used for bonding composites are based on polymeric materials similar to the resin matrices used for prepregs. Most Cytec film adhesives are based on epoxy chemistry, which offer excellent shear strength and environmental resistance.
Form and carriers
Film adhesives are typically provided in roll form, and can include support materials or carriers, per customer specifications. Carriers provide integrity for handling, control flow during cure, increase adhesive strength and manage bondline thickness. Available carriers are typically low-density knit or non-woven materials such as glass, carbon fiber, nylon or polyester. Cytec also offers metallic carriers that provide electrical paths for lightning strike protection on aircraft parts.
