Employee Safety |
Cytec’s goal is zero injuries – period. Our leaders have
made commitments to safety through our Visible Safety
Leadership Program, which we rolled out on a global
basis in 2008. We continued our commitment to safety in
2008 by investing more than $25 million in safety
capital to reduce the potential for process incidents
and other risk. Cytec has also renewed its focus on
incorporating safety, health and environmental aspects
in product and process design, and we are working to
integrate our Design for SHE principles into practice.
These efforts will continue in 2009. |
|
Injuries
For 2008, our Recordable Injury Frequency on a global
basis was 0.89, improving our performance by 27 percent
against 2007. Over 55 percent of our manufacturing sites
had no recordable injuries in 2008. While we are pleased
with the performance improvement, we remain focused on
continuously reducing injuries, and have set a 10
percent improvement target for 2009. Our lost time
injury frequency was 0.57 in 2007 and 0.37 in 2008.
Serious Process
Incidents
During 2008, we reviewed our process safety metrics and
have redefined process safety incidents through our
global incident reporting system. We define the most
serious process incidents as unplanned process incidents
that cause serious injuries or cause more than $50,000
in damage. During 2008, we had one incident that met
these criteria, with no injuries resulting from the
incident. Our goal for 2009 is zero. We are also
tracking all process incidents at our sites and
improving our systems to investigate the root causes of
these incidents.

| Our Employees
and Our Communities |
|
Cytec knows that progress and growth depend on each employee
taking responsibility, being creative and contributing to
successful performance. We value our employees and strive to
keep them engaged, empowered and challenged so they can
enjoy success. We invest in our employees’ education, growth
and personal development by:
• Providing a structured program for employee development
and career path
• Supporting employee mentoring programs
• Providing educational assistance to eligible Cytec
employees seeking higher education.
• Teams of employees participating in fundraising walks/runs
Cytec employees are actively
involved in the communities in which they live and work.
Volunteers participate in educational activities, health and
human service programs and environmental initiatives. We
have a decentralized approach to community involvement.
Donations and participation in specific initiatives are
determined by regional needs and
cultures. Some examples of involvement in 2008 include:
• Mentoring students and participating in science fairs
• Supporting fundraisers through volunteerism and giving
• Hosting community health fairs and blood drives
• Hosting tree planting and environmental awareness events.
Several of our manufacturing facilities are also actively
involved in Community Advisory Panels (CAP).

Resource Use |
During 2008, Cytec implemented a new environmental
metrics tracking system that captures all waste, energy,
greenhouse gas, SOx/NOx, water consumption, and related
data. This system will help our sites track and monitor
their performance against targets. One of Cytec’s goals
is to reduce waste and energy usage across the Company.
We have set five-year targets of 15 percent improvement
in waste reduction and energy
efficiency and are working towards achieving these
long-term goals.
Waste and
Energy Consumption
Cytec’s lean manufacturing
initiatives have helped reduce waste and energy
consumption at our manufacturing sites. Waste reduction
has improved by over five percent in the first two
years.
Greenhouse Gas
Emissions
Since joining EPA Climate Leaders in 2007, Cytec has
been in the process of reviewing energy data and
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions data, as well as
reviewing progress against our five-year goal to reduce
emissions of CO2 equivalents by 12 percent per kilogram
of product. We will be tracking additional GHGs as we
move forward with the EPA Climate Leaders Program.
Cytec’s GHG emissions are primarily from energy usage,
natural gas, steam and electricity, and from chemical
processes.
Other Emissions
Cytec tracks all releases of materials to the
environment, including air, water and land, as well as
releases to secondary containment, including air
pollution control equipment and wastewater treatment
systems. Our sites have had a continuous improvement
goal to reduce all unanticipated emissions to the
environment by 10 percent, year-on-year. During 2008,
those releases were reduced by 16 percent. |
|
Sustainability Innovation |
Cytec has developed a Web-based tool to assess product
sustainability, using metrics that reflect the Twelve
Principles of Green Chemistry. This sustainability index
will be used by our technical community to allow them
to:
• Establish a baseline of our current sustainability
status within new product development
• Provide guidance in choosing the most effective
approach towards improving process and product
sustainability
• Generally educate our scientists to what
sustainability and green chemistry are and what they can
do to influence them.
In addition, we have expanded our prior efforts on a
Cytec Solvent Selection Guide into consideration of the
environmental burdens of all of our raw materials. We
are building a system that will allow our scientists to
make informed and environmentally prudent choices
regarding all materials used in our processes.
The Cytec Innovation
Management System (CIMS), a stage-gate process
established over the last four years, is now used to
efficiently manage all critical elements of new product
development. As part of our ongoing sustainability
initiative, the sustainability aspects of CIMS have been
upgraded to help focus our efforts in this important
direction. This upgrade will allow a quantitative
assessment of the impact of individual projects, with
the higher level of information provided by our
sustainability index. This will also allow us to compile
summary statistics on sustainability in new product
development and set targets for overall improvement.
Together, these tools will help us drive
commercialization of safer and more environmentally
friendly products.

SHE
Management Systems |
Cytec continues to fully implement an externally
certified SHE Management System. Our system incorporates
ISO 14001 (environment), RC14001 requirements, security,
product stewardship, emergency response, and value chain
management with an option to include OHSAS 18001
(occupational safety). In 2008, nine facilities
successfully implemented the SHE Management System. This
included five manufacturing sites and four R&D
facilities. At this time, over 80 percent of our
facilities are currently implementing the management
system.
|
|
Plant Security |
Cytec performed security vulnerability assessments at
all of our
U.S. operating facilities, focusing on their potential
security risks.
Several improvement opportunities were identified and
subsequently
implemented. Recognizing the opportunity for continuous
improvement, our facilities outside of the U.S. recently
performed
very similar assessments.
