BUSINESS/TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCES (Must have):
What specific skills and experience are required? And why are these skills required?
•Experience operating, maintaining, and modifying metal reaction vessels is required as this person will be the primary owner/operator of our 5-gallon pilot reactor.
•Ability to calculate heats of reaction, mass balance, and volatile emissions in order to assess the safety for a proposed new product, process, or raw material.
•Ability to convert lab-scale glass reactor processes into pilot and manufacturing scale, especially rates of material additions, reaction, and product packaging.
•Ability to select and put into place pilot scale equipment, including pumps, motors, piping, etc.
•Ability to wear a respirator and other safety equipment for chemical protection when needed, for example while charging chemicals into a reactor.
•Safely handle packages of 50 lbs. or more in order to be able to charge reagents to the 5-gallon reactor and package the product.
•Possess normal senses of sight, smell, and hearing, which are required for experimental observation and/or safety reasons.
•Reach high and low places, which include using a step stool, in order to successfully operator and maintain the pilot reactor.
•Good laboratory skills are required in order to work productively and safely.
•Ability to handle cold, hot, caustic and corrosive reagents in a safe manner.
•Ability to handle potential allergens and/or sensitizing agents on a regular basis.
•Good computer skills are needed in order to effectively use our new product development tools, including PLIMS, CIMS, and others.
EDUCATION "REQUIRED" (Must Have):
MS degree in Chemical Engineering or BS degree and 4-5 years of hands on pilot experience.
EDUCATION "PREFERRED" (Additional):
What are the specific areas or elements of education that apply toward accomplishing the job responsibilities and why do you PREFER that level of education?
•Ability to design a process train for a particular product/process in order to identify required pilot and manufacturing equipment changes needed to produce a particular new product/process that is under development developed.
•Ability to plan and execute capital projects involving engineering design and construction for the purpose of modifying an existing reactor or installing a new reactor in order to implement new products/processes.
•Sufficient knowledge of chemistry in to identify compatibility/incompatibility with existing equipment, products, packages, and materials.
Key Measurements for this Position (over the next 12 months):
•Meet Radcure targets for NPI sales, MI dollars, VI, and QI.
•No gates missed for CIMS projects supported as a team member.
•Meet Smyrna 5-gallon Pilot Plant metrics (TAT < 4 weeks, > 90% FTR).
•Monthly safety inspections completed. No repeat Safety Inspection offenses.
•At least one lab clean-up held.
•Baseline safety audit items related to the the 5-gallon reactor are closed.
•All safety incidents are recorded and resulting action items closed.
Future Expectations of this Position (1 to 3 years):
•Grow to become the North America R&D expert for new product scale up strategy and transfer to manufacturing.
•Product Line Manager at the North Augusta site.
Short-term Challenges Facing this Position (first 90 days):
•Learn the processes to prepare the various classes of products, including epoxy acrylates, urethane acrylates, and their blends.
•Quickly become the site expert on the operation and maintenance of the 5-gallon reactor.
•Learn the new product development processes and tools, including PLIMS, MOC, CIMS, Birthtrack, and others.
•Learn the capabilities and limitations of our manufacturing units in order to develop processes that fit existing capabilities.

Progression up the technical ladder.
How much travel is expected? Occasional travel (6-8 times/year) may be needed to support the pilot plant in North Augusta (3 hrs away) or attend training and internal conferences.
What size of the facility/client group/staff?
R&D Group of 13 scientists and technicians within a total site population of about 80 people.
